Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and as the majority of people around the globe will be spending this Valentine’s Day at home, there will no doubt be a lot of people resorting to ‘Netflix and chill’. I’ve rounded up some of the best films to watch this Valentine’s Day, whether you are looking for a light-hearted rom-com or something a little more adult.
Deadpool
Superhero movies often follow the same pattern when it comes to their story – superhero’s love interest gets kidnapped by super villain attempting to take over the world, superhero then goes on a quest to win back their love interest and save the world. Whilst Deadpool doesn’t break the mould in the overall structure, it is one of the most outrageously funny and unique superhero movies out there! There is a surprising romantic element to Deadpool which drives the narrative and its light-hearted goofiness means this is an easy Valentine’s Day watch.

Up
You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to Disney movies to watch on Valentine’s Day. One of my personal favourites is Pixar’s Up, which is a beautiful story of elderly widower Carl Fredricksen as he explores the wilds of South America, to fulfil a promise he made to his late wife. You will struggle to find a more emotional scene in any film than the opening sequence of Up!

Fifty Shades of Grey
Probably one of the most popular “romantic” films in recent years, Fifty Shades of Grey definitely springs to mind when you think of Valentine’s Day movies. If you can get past the terrible screenplay and pacing, at the heart of its erotic core is a somewhat disjointed romantic story. Whilst Fifty Shades of Grey is softcore enough to watch without feeling too uncomfortable, it is certainly one of the more ‘out there’ movies for adult audiences.

A Star Is Born (2018 film)
The 2018 remake of A Star Is Born is simply spine-tingling and a definite film to watch regardless of the day of the year! With fantastic performances from both Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga as well as a faultless original soundtrack, A Star Is Born is a film not to be missed. The chemistry between the characters is electrifying and the narrative which follows their love story is truly awe-inspiring.

Just Go With It
Just Go With It is a classic rom-com movie starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston as the leads. It’s silly, nonsensical story don’t win it any awards, but it’s light-hearted comedy and cast make this a fun watch. Plus, a good chunk of the film is spent in Hawaii which just looks amazing!

Crazy Rich Asians
Crazy Rich Asians is probably one of my favourite rom-coms of recent years! Featuring a stellar cast, the story follows a Chinese-American professor who travels to Singapore to meet her boyfriend’s family to discover they are one of the richest families in Asia. Crazy Rich Asians is a quirky, fun romantic comedy which avoids the clichés and will certainly surprise you.

Lady and the Tramp
Who says Valentine’s Day has to just be for humans? Lady and the Tramp is the familiar tale of American Cocker Spaniel, Lady, falling in love with stray mutt, Tramp. The 1955 original animated film is my preferred version of the love story, but the live-action remake is a good watch too, maybe just lacking a little bit of the magic from the original. Either way, you can’t go wrong with Lady and the Tramp and this is a film which younger viewers can enjoy too.
