Episode 7 of WandaVision was released today on Disney+, following on from the dramatic ending to episode 6 last week. You can read my thoughts on the previous episodes here or continue reading for my thoughts on episode 7. Be warned – spoilers below!
Wow, we are edging ever closer to the finale of WandaVision and this week’s episode is the most intense so far! There’s so much to take in, Monica seemingly gaining super powers, Vision now knowing his true past courtesy of Darcy, Agnes is really Agatha Harkness and has been meddling all along AND we finally get a mid-credits scene! Episode 7 is definitely my favourite episode so far and sets the show up for an epic conclusion over the next 2 weeks.
Episode 7 is set in a late 2000s setting and emulates a modern mockumentary-style sitcom, similar to that of The Office and Modern Family. This sitcom style is my favourite to date and it works fantastically for the relationship between Wanda and the twins and we see a great laid back style to Wanda as a result. The ‘talk-to-the-camera’ style to the episode works really well and gives us an insight into Wanda and Vision’s honest thoughts on events in the hex.
We get another commercial, this time in the form of Nexus antidepressants which is a plainly obvious nod to the hex and the ‘world’ Wanda has created, but this could also be a massive clue into future events. In the comics, The Nexus is a cross-dimensional gateway which provides a pathway to any and all possible realities, essentially hinting at the multiverse. We know that Wanda will appear in the upcoming film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but could WandaVision directly link to the upcoming movie? Could Doctor Strange potentially make an appearance later in the WandaVision series?
We finally meet Monica’s contact, Major Goodner, who provides Monica with a suit and vehicle which should be capable of entering the hex. When the density of the hex matches Monica’s vehicle and destroys it, she decides to go in on foot and boy were we in for a surprise! When Monica is stuck within the static wall, we get a frantic shot of her pushing through and see her hearing different voices encouraging her to progress, notably one of which is Captain Marvel’s voice.
Once Monica finally emerges, she seemingly has gained heightened vision – I mentioned last week that the hex changing people’s cells could be an indication to mutants being introduced into the MCU and it seems as if Monica could be our first one! In the comics, Monica gains the ability to convert her body to energy and obtains the alias of Photon which looks like what could be developing here. If this is true, I can’t wait to see more of her and learn how she gains the rest of her powers, given that she is set to appear in Captain Marvel 2 next year!
The series has been fantastic at making us question who Agnes is; there were a lot of suspicions and assumptions made in the initial episodes as to whether she was Agatha Harkness, but then after last week’s episode, we seemingly all thought she was just another resident under Wanda’s control. This week, Agnes finally revealed herself as magic wielding Agatha Harkness (through a rather catchy theme song I might add) and explained that she was responsible for all of the trouble caused in Westview.
Agatha reveals she sent Pietro to Wanda, but as Wanda mentions early in the episode, Pietro is not actually her brother which begs the question, who is he and why is he working with Agatha? Agatha also reveals that she killed poor little Sparky, which in my eyes already makes her worse than Thanos! Joking aside, Kathryn Hahn is fantastic within the role of Agatha Harkness and I’m really looking forward to finding out her motives for meddling with Wanda.
After 6 weeks of waiting we finally got a mid-credits scene! Monica discovers Agatha’s basement, only to be caught red-handed by “Pietro” which sets episode 8 up for an even more exciting climax. Will Monica gain any more powers? What will Pietro do to her? What are Agatha’s plans for Wanda? And what is Vision going to do now he knows the truth? I can’t wait to find out!
