Flora & Ulysses released last week on Disney+ and I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of easter eggs scattered throughout the film. Being a Disney original film, it’s nice to see Disney flexing their ownership rights with a number of Marvel, Star Wars and general pop culture references, in a film which I really wasn’t expecting to see any in! I’ve rounded some of the best easter eggs from Flora & Ulysses – fair warning though, this post does contain some minor spoilers!
Jack and Rose
Early on in Flora & Ulysses we learn that Flora’s mother Phyllis is a romance novelist and had previously won an award from Romantic Living Magazine, which is presented in the shape of Jack and Rose from the movie Titanic. Later on in the film, Flora accidently drops the award causing it to split resulting in Jack rather comically sinking into water whilst Rose looks on, a perfect little tribute to Titanic.
Flora & Ulysses brings together Ben Schwartz, Danny Pudi, Bobby Moynihan and Kate Micucci, all of whom worked together previously in the 2017 Disney series of DuckTales. Eagle eyed viewers may have noticed Bobby Moynihan’s character, comic book store owner StanLee (another Marvel reference), reading a DuckTales comic book as Flora enters the store!
There are tons of Marvel references within Flora & Ulysses, ranging from the Marvel comics through to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film starts with a comic book style opening and we see a number of well-known Marvel superheroes like Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Wolverine and Iron Man. Later on in the film, we see a shot of Flora’s front door and if you look closely, you can see that the doorbell is designed in the shape of Captain America’s shield.
There are literally dozens of Marvel references in the comic book store scenes of the film and one I found particularly interesting was what appears to be Wanda Maximoff’s red head piece, as worn in the comics. This head piece has also recently featured in episode 6 of WandaVision when Wanda is dressed as a ‘Sokovian fortune teller’, which is pretty awesome given how Flora & Ulysses and WandaVision’s releases have coincided with each other!
I love you 3000
Possibly one of my favourite easter eggs in Flora & Ulysses and possibly one of the more obvious, is when Flora and her dad are sat outside looking up at the stars and Flora says to her dad “I love you 3000”. This is an obvious nod to Tony and Morgan Stark in Avengers: Endgame, but this father daughter relationship makes this scene even more fitting.
Star Wars features quite prominently throughout Flora & Ulysses too, with one of the best easter eggs coming in the shape of Flora’s doorbell, which plays out the tune of the “Imperial March”. It’s Flora’s dad, played by Ben Schwartz, who set the doorbell to play this which is epic considering Ben Schwartz created the voice for BB-8 in the Star Wars films! There are other Star Wars references too, like StanLee’s t-shirt in the comic book store adorning a graphic of Kylo Ren.
There are plenty of other references and easter eggs throughout the film, but these are just a few which I feel make this film even more fun! Flora & Ulysses is available to stream now on Disney+ and you can check out my full movie review here.
