5 Nintendo Switch games to look forward to in 2021

New Pokémon Snap artwork for the Nintendo Switch

Four years since its release, the Nintendo Switch still proves to be one of Nintendo’s best-selling consoles, having sold just under 80 million units to date. New Nintendo Switch game releases have been somewhat hindered over the past 12 months as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, but thankfully as things are now getting back to some form of normality, there are a number of exciting Switch games set to release later this year.

New Pokémon Snap

2021 marks the 25th anniversary of Pokémon and to celebrate, Nintendo and the Pokémon company are bringing us a few games for the Nintendo Switch! First on the list is New Pokémon Snap, a first-person simulation game where players explore various islands in the Lental region and take photographs of wild Pokémon. Whilst the premise seems pretty simple and a much slower approach than classic battle-based Pokémon games, I for one am looking forward to it! Snap feels as if it could just be the relaxing, laid-back Pokémon game I am missing for my Switch!

Release date: 30th April 2021 (Pre-order on Amazon here)

Miitopia

The Mii legacy lives on! With a dedicated Mii channel, the ability to use Miis in game and a capability to ‘store’ and transfer Miis across multiple Nintendo devices, Miis were all the rage back when the Nintendo Wii launched back in 2006. Their legacy did die off a little bit as the Nintendo Wii became discontinued, however in 2017, the dedicated Miitopia game was released for the 3DS. The game had generally favourable reviews and was a hit amongst long term fans and as a result, we are getting a dedicated remaster for the Switch releasing this year. And so the Mii uprising begins!

Release date: 21st May 2021 (Pre-order on Amazon here)

Mario Golf: Super Rush

Of all Switch games set to release in 2021, Mario Golf: Super Rush is the one I’m most looking forward to! I’m a big sports fan and love all of the Mario sports spin offs and considering its been 7 years since the last Mario Golf game, this has been long overdue! The trailer for the game looks like great fun and given players can actually use the Switch’s motion controls to play the game, it feels like it has very much a Wii Sports vibe to it! Fingers crossed Mario Golf: Super Rush can be as much of a success as the recent Mario Tennis Aces.

Release date: 25th June 2021 (Pre-order on Amazon here)

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

Skyward Sword HD is yet another Nintendo remaster launching in 2021, with Skyward Sword HD being a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword game released for the Nintendo Wii in 2011. Zelda games very rarely disappoint and I remember loving Skyward Sword on the Nintendo Wii when it was first released, some 10 years ago now. The remaster is set to release in July this year and will reportedly play at 60 frames per second.

Release date: 16th July 2021 (Pre-order on Amazon here)

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond/Pokémon Shining Pearl

Pokémon Pearl was one of my absolute favourite Pokémon games on the Nintendo DS and I am so pleased it is getting a remake! Releasing late this year, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl are enhanced remakes of the 2006 Nintendo DS games, Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl. The art style of the game has been criticized quite heavily since the game was announced and in fairness, it does feel like a bit of a step backwards when compared to Pokémon Sword/Shield, although I do like the ‘top-down’ view which feels like a nod to the classic Pokémon games. Watching the trailer brings back so many great memories and I’m just praying the remaster lives up to the original.

Release date: Late 2021 (Pre-order on Amazon here)

2021 is seemingly the year of remakes and remasters for the Nintendo Switch, with all of the games above taking some form inspiration from previous games. We’ve seen remasters go both ways over the years, but I’m confident that Nintendo have the capabilities to create some fantastic games which will being back all of that nostalgia from years ago.
