The highly anticipated Friends Reunion aired in the UK yesterday and as expected, it was an emotional rollercoaster. With guest appearances from characters like Mr Heckles to Joey’s hand twin, as well as a fashion show featuring some of the shows’ most hilarious outfits, the reunion was a fabulous look back at a show which captured the hearts of so many. I’ve picked out 5 things we learnt from Friends: The Reunion.
Friends is huge
Love it or hate it, there is no denying that Friends is undoubtedly one of the biggest television shows of all time. The show’s popularity has been well documented over the years, but interviews with fans in countries like Ghana and Japan just goes to show the global appeal the series has. The way in which Friends brought people together and helped people through tough times, just shows that Friends is so much more than just a television series.
Likewise, it was fascinating hearing interviews with stars like David Beckham, Mindy Kaling and Kit Harrington. I always find it interesting learning about celebrities’ interests and it was great seeing the affection they all have towards the show. Heck, even Justin Bieber was willing to dress up as ‘Spudnik’ for the cause of the show!
Ross and Rachel’s attraction was real
Probably the one thing which was most heart-warming about the reunion was learning that Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer actually had huge crushes on one another during the first few seasons of filming. Despite never getting together in real life, you can’t help but think that their real-life attraction was somewhat translated on-screen. Looking back at the series, it makes moments like Ross and Rachel’s first kiss that extra bit special.
They are all really Friends in real life
Despite the reunion being only the second time all six cast members have all been in a room together since filming, it was clear to see the lifetime bond which the cast has. As Matthew Perry explained, whenever any of the six cast members would bump into each other they would sit down and chat for hours and hours. Watching the series as a fan, I always got the sense that they were a close-knit group of friends and some of the outtakes from the show really cemented that family like bond.
Marcel was a little sh*t
Ross’s pet monkey Marcel was somewhat of a fan favourite character in the early seasons of Friends, but as we found out in the Reunion, he was much more difficult to work with than things appeared! David Schwimmer recounted how Marcel ‘wouldn’t do his job right’ by missing cues and what’s more, he would rub his ‘monkey grubby hands’ all over David! It’s fair to say Ross and Marcel’s relationship stayed strictly onscreen! There was no word however on how the cast got on with the likes of Clunkers or the chick and the duck!
There are no plans for any future spin offs
Any rumours of a potential spin off episode or spin off film were put to bed during the reunion by all of the members of the cast. Like the creators of the show said, the series was left in such a perfect place at the end of the tenth season that unravelling things and trying to piece things back together would be such a difficult task. That being said, it was brilliant to hear from each of the six cast members on their thoughts about what each of their characters would be up to nowadays.
The Friends Reunion certainly delivered and just seeing all the cast together again, looking back at such an important era in their lives, felt a privilege to watch. It would be great to see them get together again for something similar in the future.
