The third episode of Marvel Studios’ latest anthology series, What If…?, released this week on Disney+. You can check out my initial thoughts on episode 3 below. Be warned – spoilers after the break!
After a slow start to the series, Marvel’s What If…? is really beginning to pick up! As the series has progressed, we’re seeing even more scenarios of different timelines within the MCU. This week, episode 3 explores what would happen if the world lost its mightiest heroes.
The formation of the Avengers has been touched upon in various MCU media in the past, but I really enjoyed how episode 3 explored how Nick Fury set out to recruit heroes for the Avengers Initiative. Seeing Nick Fury and Natasha Romanoff’s chemistry in the car on the way to recruit Tony Stark and the brief mention of how Fury recruited Natasha, really made me want an Avengers origin story with Fury and Natasha going round recruiting various heroes! Likewise, an origin story on how Clint Barton was recruited by Fury would be awesome too!
There are a host different voice actors in episode 3 of What If…? and whilst the majority of the characters are voice by their MCU counterparts, there were a few notable exceptions. I was pleasantly surprised with Mick Wingert who voiced Tony Stark/Iron Man, as it wasn’t until the credits that I realised it hadn’t been Robert Downey Jnr all along! Similarly, Lake Bell standing in for Scarlett Johannsson as Black Widow was highly convincing, minus that rasp Scarlett Johansson has to her voice!
It was also great to see the likes of Phil Coulson and Hank Pym in the episode too! Phil Coulson is a bit of a fan favourite character for most MCU fans, so it was great to see his character reprieved within the MCU and not just in the Agents of Shield series. Likewise, I really enjoyed seeing Hank Pym in the episode, particularly the crazy, hellbent on revenge version we saw of him! I found the storyline of him killing the Avengers as revenge for the death of his daughter to be a little stretched, but nevertheless, the way in which he killed the Hulk was undoubtedly the goriest death we’ve seen in the MCU!
Towards the end of the episode, we see Loki stay on Earth and become its ruler, in addition to Fury assembling a new team of heroes including Steve Rogers and Carol Danvers. Again, I’d loved to have seen where the episode would have gone from this point and more to the point, whom else Fury would have recruited for his new Avenger team. Each episode has ended on somewhat of a cliff-hanger and that does make me think whether perhaps season 2 of What If…? may explore each storyline in more detail.
All in all, I really enjoyed episode 3 of What If…?, it’s certainly been my favourite in the series so far. Each episode is posing so many questions and creating endless possibilities for what could happen in the MCU that it’s really captivating me! Roll on episode 4!
What If…? is available to stream on Disney+, with new episodes releasing every Wednesday.
