Episode of six Marvel Studios’ latest anthology series, What If…?, released earlier this week on Disney+. You can check out my initial thoughts on episode 6 below. Be warned – spoilers after the break!
After the exciting zombified episode of What If…? arrived last week, this week What If…? explores what would happen if Erik Killmonger rescued Tony Stark when he is ambushed by the criminal organisation the Ten Rings, in Afghanistan. The change to the storyline means effectively Iron Man never sees the light of day and instead, the episode explores how Erik Killmonger becomes the new Black Panther.
Killmonger rescuing Tony Stark from Afghanistan is actually a super cool narrative as it effectively veers Tony away from the path of becoming Iron Man. As a result, we get to see even more into Tony’s lavish lifestyle and an insight into what Killmonger joining Tony at Stark Industries would look like. The whole concept of Tony not going onto become Iron Man is hugely thought provoking, particularly given the massive role Iron Man plays across the MCU in the formation of the Avengers and of course how he stops Thanos. I’d loved to have seen how the MCU would have played out without Tony Stark at the heart of it.
Considering a good chunk of the episode features Tony Stark, you’d do a good job at noticing it’s not actually Robert Downey Jr voicing him! It’s actually renowned voice actor Mick Wingert and I have to say, he does an absolutely brilliant job! From perfectly imitating RDJ’s voice to the splendid delivery of his lines, I was highly impressed with how perfect he sounded. It’s no simple task stepping into the shoes of arguably the most popular superhero of all time, but Mick Wingert makes it look easy.
It was also great to hear the voices of Andy Serkis, Don Cheadle and Michael B Jordan all back within the MCU voicing their own relevant characters. It’s been a while since we’ve seen Ulysses Klaue in the MCU and his brief appearance in episode six of What If…? only reinforces the point that we needed to see more of Andy Serkis within the Marvel Universe! Likewise, Killmonger very much steals the show in the episode and his ruthless nature again emphasizes just how good of a villain he was.
Much like we’ve seen in previous episodes of What If…?, episode six ends on a cliff-hanger! More so with the later episodes in the series, but I’m definitely getting the impression that Marvel are leaving the door open to these alternate storylines should they wish to revisit them in series two. Given how enjoyable the series has been so far, I hope this is the case!
What If…? is available to stream on Disney+, with new episodes releasing every Wednesday.
