The Pause Menu Awards 2021

After the numerous delays and postponements the COVID-19 pandemic caused in 2020, 2021 was undoubtedly a great year for entertainment, despite facing many of the same challenges.

In the world of film, we finally saw the long-anticipated James Bond No Time to Die release in cinemas, as well as the likes of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Godzilla vs. Kong and Fast & Furious 9 all also releasing. In the television world, we saw Netflix’s Squid Game break numerous records across the globe, as well as Marvel dipping their toe into the world of television with instant classics such as WandaVision, Loki and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. And finally, 2021 saw a plethora of different video games release throughout the year with titles such as Halo Infinite, New Pokémon Snap and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy all keeping us glued to our consoles.

As we look forward to a year of awesome entertainment in 2022, it’s time celebrate some of 2021’s greatest entertainment with The Pause Menu Awards!

Movie of the Year

With its stunning animation, perfect Southeast Asian setting and a feel-good adventure story, Raya and the Last Dragon absolutely blew me away when it released back in March 2021. There’s a lot to love about Raya and the Last Dragon and I have no doubt that it will be a Disney classic in years to come, and for me, it just about clinches its title of Movie of the Year!

Notable mentions: Spider-Man: No Way Home, No Time to Die

Television Series of the Year

Winner: WandaVision

You could pick any of Marvel’s television series released in 2021 and argue its case for Television Series of the Year, but for me WandaVision is not only one of Marvel’s best pieces of work in 2021, it’s one of their best pieces of content ever! Not only did the series break boundaries with its sitcom style approach, WandaVision really drove the MCU into a new direction with its style and tone and is therefore a worthy winner of Television Series of the Year.

Notable mentions: Clarkson’s Farm, Loki

Video Game of the Year

Far Cry 6 Ubisoft

Winner: Far Cry 6

I put more hours than I care to share into video games in 2021 so this was undoubtedly the hardest category for me to a pick a winner in! Whilst it may not be the perfect game by any means, the unparalleled fun of taking out a military base alongside your trusty sausage dog companion, coupled with one of the best video game villains of all time, make Far Cry 6 my Video Game of the Year.

Notable mentions: It Takes Two, Forza Horizon 5

So there you have it, The Pause Menu Awards 2021! Picking a winner in each category was by no means an easy task; there has barely been anything which I’ve reviewed over the past 12 months which I haven’t enjoyed! Hopefully 2022 can provide us with just as many laughs, gasps and emotions as 2021 one has.
