10 video games to look forward to in 2022

Horizon Forbidden West Reveal Trailer PlayStation YouTube

After numerous delays and setbacks in 2021, 2022 looks to be a spectacular year for the world of video games. From PlayStation exclusives to movie inspired RPGs, here are 10 video games to look forward to in 2022.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus

One of the most anticipated Pokémon games of recent years is set to release later this month in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Set in a bygone era of the Sinnoh region, Pokémon Legends: Arceus takes place long before the events of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl and combines RPG gameplay in a series first.

Releases 28th January

Horizon Forbidden West

One of three PlayStation exclusives on this list, Horizon Forbidden West is the long-anticipated sequel to 2017’s hit video game Horizon Zero Dawn. With new features including underwater exploration, enhanced melee combat and the addition of the Valor Surge system, plus given how optimised the game is for PlayStation 5, Horizon Forbidden West is a game I’ve been looking forward to since its announcement!

Releases 18th February

Gran Turismo 7

Five years since we’ve last had a new Gran Turismo game, Gran Turismo 7 looks finally set to hit our PlayStations this March. With over 420 cars, over 90 tracks and optimisation for the PS5, Gran Turismo 7 is set to be one of the biggest Gran Turismo games to date. With the huge success of Xbox’s Forza series over the past few years, I’m eager to see how PlayStation hit back with Gran Turismo 7.

Releases 4th March

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

Probably the game I’m most eager to play in 2022 is undoubtedly Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Lego Video games very rarely disappoint and with 45 in game levels, over 300 playable characters and a wide range of fully explorable planets, I have full confidence in saying The Skywalker Saga will be nothing short of a masterpiece!

Releases 5th April

Starfield

An Xbox exclusive, Starfield has the potential to be one of the biggest and best games of all time, let alone 2022. Described by Bethesda director Todd Howard as “Skyrim in space”, Starfield is an interstellar RPG, with exploration at its core. With the huge success of Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls and Fallout series’, the sky is truly the limit for Starfield.

Releases 11th November

Hogwarts Legacy

An open-world RPG set in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World is set for release later this year and could just be the game Harry Potter fans have been waiting for! Set in the late 1800s following a student at Hogwarts, players can choose their Hogwarts House, attend classes and explore many magical locations across the Wizarding World. The potential for this game is HUGE, let’s just hope it lives up to the hype.

Lord of the Rings: Gollum

Set before the events of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings: Gollum is a story-driven action adventure, following the titular character Gollum as he takes on a perilous journey across Middle Earth. Any venture back into Middle Earth is a huge positive in my eyes and I’m hoping Lord of the Rings: Gollum can serve as a catalyst for future Lord of the Rings inspired games!

Release date TBC (rumoured to be Autumn 2022)

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

Another video game inspired by the big screen, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is an open-world action-adventure game, based on James Cameron’s Avatar film series. Thus far we know very little about the game itself, other than that the game is set to tell a standalone story within the Avatar universe. Time will tell whether in fact Frontiers of Pandora will actually release in 2022, but you can bet if it does, it will tie in with the release of Avatar 2 which releases in December (supposedly!)

Release date TBC

God of War Ragnarök

The final PlayStation exclusive to look out for in 2022, God of War Ragnarök is the ninth instalment in the God of War series and serves as a sequel to 2018’s God of War. The God of War series has been a huge success since the very first God of War game released back in 2005 for the PlayStation 2 and for many, God of War Ragnarök is an absolute day one purchase.

Release date TBC

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2

There are a few Switch games which I am looking forward to in 2022, but none more so than The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2. The first instalment in the Breath of the Wild series which released back in 2017 is widely regarded as one of the greatest video games of all time, so it’s safe to say there are some pretty lofty expectations for BOTW2. Whilst Nintendo are aiming to release the game in 2022, don’t be surprised if it ends up being delayed.
